Eight (8) anglers attended the opening round of Chris Standing's winter league series. The league, which takes place over six (6) rounds across three (3) different venues began here at Woodside on Sunday 29th October on the Woodside pool.
Conditions on the day were fairly typical for the time of year - damp, cold but bright. However, some heavy showers moved in towards the end of the match spoiling slightly what had otherwise been a pleasant day weather-wise.
Winner on the day was Bryan Burley, who drew peg 8 opposite the island beneath the oak tree. Opting to fish maggot up in the water and on the deck, Bryan was able to maintain a steady catch rate throughout the day bringing quality roach, rudd and skimmers to the net. Bryan offered 31-08-00 to the scales to win by a comfortable margin.
Second place was taken by Chris Standing from peg 21. Again, focusing mainly on an all out maggot attack, Chris caught up in the water and on the deck but was plagued by carp on all of his lines. Among the roach, rudd and skimmers, Chris connected with twenty five (25) carp and landed eighteen (18) of them for an estimated 140lb! Chris' silver net tipped the scales at 19-12-00.
Third place went to Brian Freeth from peg 10. Fishing maggot on the deck short, Bryan also struggled with carp but still managed 16-06-00 of mainly roach to take the last of the main frame placings.
Chris and the lads will be back in January 2024 for round four.
