Wendy Latham Memorial, Woodside Pool

Saturday 20th September marked the first ever Wendy Latham Memorial match. The event, founded by Wendy's husband John Latham, has been created to help raise money for Myeloma UK, who were instrumental in the care and treatment that Wendy received whilst she was unwell, and of course to honour her memory after she sadly passed away in January this year. The fishery have already pledged to make the Wendy Latham Memorial an annual event with next year's event taking place on Saturday 26th September 2026.

Conditions on the day, unfortunately, were horrendous with fifteen (15) brave anglers hunkered down on Woodside pool in what turned out to be persistent rain for the duration. Whereas the bad weather did little to dampen the spirits of the competing anglers it did, however, affect the standard of fishing on the day.

Winner on a difficult day, and the first ever winner of the Wendy Latham Memorial trophy, was Scott Banks of TREC AC. Scott drew peg 8 round the back of the island and caught most of his fish on paste in mere inches of water down his edge to offer 67-11-00 to the scales to finish well clear of the rest of the field.

Finishing in second place on the day was Lawrence Connolly, who drew neighbouring peg 10. Loz fished maggot short for most of the match in an effort to target the quality silverfish, which he did for the most part, to end the match with 37-01-00, including a few carp.

Third place was awarded to Josh Gaunt, who drew 18. Josh also found his fish short, but instead of maggot, Josh offered hard pellet to weigh in 27-04-00.

Despite both the weather and the fishing being less than ideal, the event was a huge success. A raffle took place after the match with a wide variety of prizes on offer including drink, bait, fishing tackle, hampers, clothing and bedding. A special thank you to everyone that contributed to the raffle, including Angling Direct, Vard's Tackle & Bait and Strike Angling as well as those that contributed additional prizes and monetary donations. Finally, thank you to the anglers who very kindly donated their winnings back to charity.

All in all, over £600 was raised on the day for Myeloma UK, which for the events first year, was a great effort from everyone involved.

If you would like to make a donation, John and his family have set up a Just Giving page at the link below:

Finally, a huge congratulations to Scott Banks on being the first angler to win the Wendy Latham Memorial. We couldn't think of a more deserving winner.
