Nine (9) anglers attended this first club match of the 2026 season with anglers pegged down on Woodside pool. Conditions were, once again, a bit of a mixed bag with a chilly start, rain and hail mid-match followed by periods of bright sunshine as the match drew to a close.
Winner on the day was Lawrence Connolly. Fresh off the back of his main frame finish on the Match Angler Of The Year final, 'Loz' went to permanent peg 4 with plenty of confidence, but soon found out the carp were going to play hard to get. Not long in to the match, the wind had also began to pick up so Loz opted to fish maggot down both his edges and managed to put together a fine bag of quality silvers including big roach and skimmers before having another go for the carp. By this time in the match, Loz could see fish cruising around the island so decided to try mugging a few fish. This change of tactics produced seven good-sized fish for Loz boosting his overall weight come the end of the match to 53-08-00, which included over 20lb of silvers.
Finishing in second place, but a way off Loz's pace, was Josh Gaunt from peg 8. Josh started his match on the feeder chucking to the island with maggot, but could only find roach and skimmers. A switch to the short pole with maggot and soft hook pellet hookbaits produced three carp later on in the match to give Josh a final 15-14-00.
Finishing close behind in third place was Dave Lewis from peg 20 on the opposite side of the lake. Fishing maggot over groundbait on the short pole, Dave put together a decent net of silvers, including some big skimmers and perch. Unfortunately for Dave, the carp failed to show giving him a final weight of 12-09-00.
